The latest feature from director Dean Peterson, whose short film Sea Beach Local was a 2015 RiverRun selection, What Children Do is a biting yet heartfelt comedy about two estranged sisters suddenly thrust back into each other’s lives by the impending death of their grandmother. Co-stars Nicole Rodenburg and Grace Rex (Master of None) shine in all their passive-aggressive, sisterly glory as they work to repair their feral relationship in this surprisingly mature film about a pair of often very childish women. Rex’s eager-to-please homebody Shannon presents the perfect foil to Rodenburg’s self-involved, vocal-fried (think Aubrey Plaza in anything – with more dramatic range) sister Amy, and rising comedic star John Early (Other People, Search Party) supports with the right amount of warmth, humor and perspective as Pastor Wes, a welcome voice of reason for the adrift siblings as they undertake to negotiate the rough waters that inevitably accompany the loss of a loved one.
