Adiós Lucy ... Te amamos
We have some sad news to report. Lucy Cabarga, a legendary booster of Mexican cinema and a long-time friend of RiverRun, passed away yesterday near her home in Cuernavaca. Lucy assisted RiverRun tremendously over the years, attending our fest many times (most recently in 2009), recommending films, providing advice... and helping us develop deep and lasting relationships with some of her country's greatest filmmaking talents.
Lucy was a fan of RiverRun from nearly the beginning, when we were a much smaller festival (albeit with grand ambitions). And like the many young Mexican filmmakers whose careers she helped guide, RiverRun benefited enormously from her support as well. Because of her, for instance, we got to know filmmakers like Luis Mondoki, Guillermo Arriaga, Carlos Reygadas and Francesco Tabone, and share their work with our audiences. Lucy also served as a founding member of our Advisory Board and was the principal reason we inaugurated our Spotlight program in 2010 with a focus on the History of Mexican cinema.
Lucy is phenomenally important to all of us here at RiverRun... and her contributions to our artistic growth are nothing short of immense. We are grateful to have counted her as a friend... and are so sad to hear of her passing. Farewell Lucy... we will miss you terribly... but we pledge to carry forward your enthusiasm for great cinema.
