Joseph H. Lewis SYNOPSIS:
A young woman takes a job as secretary to a seemingly innocuous elderly woman, only to quickly discover things are not at all what they seem in this briskly moving and brilliantly stylized film noir. Based on Anthony Gilbert’s novel, “The Woman in Red,” this marks one of the few times a film started out as a B-picture and then was elevated to A-level status by its studio, Columbia Pictures. Describing his work with the cameraman, the director once said, “I made him do shots which made him shudder.”
