Starring Gerard Butler, Stellan Skarsgård and Sarah Polley, this is the 2005 feature-film adaptation of the medieval epic poem Beowulf whose “cursed” production is the subject of our documentary competition feature Wrath of Gods. Arduously filmed in remote areas of Iceland, the film follows the tale of a Norse warrior’s quest to rid a Danish village of the vengeful monster Grendel in the year 500 A.D. The deeper subtext of the tale, however, is an exploration of the clashes of culture and changing codes of honor that arise in a Northern Europe where the reign of the Norse gods is being replaced by the rise of Christianity.
