In this gorgeously photographed 2007 Academy Award-winning short, the Hong-Kong born director Ruby Yang and American producer Thomas Lennon profile the AIDS epidemic in the Anhui Province of rural China, exposing the region’s tragic lack of adequate medical care and social services. When impoverished peasants in the province sell their blood (a frequent occurrence), they are often unknowingly re-injected with HIV-infected blood–then shunned by their families and communities when they contract AIDS. By following the struggles of several young children orphaned by this circumstance, the film reveals the core of courage and determination that can survive even in those whom society has pushed aside.
