Chop Shop tells the story of Alejandro, a 12-year-old Latino street orphan living in Willet’s Point, New York City. Alejandro works illegally at one of the auto shops painting and repairing cars. Spunky, strong-willed and resourceful Alejandro has learned to cope in a harsh adult world, earning money, running errands and securing customers for his boss’ garage. He receives some support and comfort after his 16-year-old sister Isamar moves in with him. Alejandro finds her a job in a food van cooking meals for the workers in the neighborhood. While Alejandro earns extra money selling porn DVDs, his sister begins to dabble in prostitution. He stashes his money in an underground jar hoping to one day buy a mobile-food van as they dream of achieving independence by owning their own small business.
