Maria is a woman with no country. A Bulgarian immigrant and adoptive mother of a black daughter, she finds herself stricken with anxiety following a break-in at her Kentucky home. When her daughter’s aging dog dies, Maria’s house arrest puts her into equally painful and funny situations that soon entangle her neighbors.
An improvised feature by Winston-Salem native S. Cagney Gentry, soon-to-be Winston-Salem resident Thom Southerland (Proud Citizen) and lead actress Katerina Stoykova, Fort Maria is a collaborative film about three days in the lives of four women. They are four islands teeming with life that float around and affect one another, revealing an unpredictable, spontaneous story that looks and feels completely original.
Directors S. Cagney Gentry and Thom Southerland to be in attendance for screenings!
