Directed by the prolific and brilliant François Ozon (who was featured in our Spotlight on Contemporary French Masters in 2011 and directed our closing night film that year, Potiche), Frantz is a sumptuously shot, largely black-and-white period epic that takes place shortly after WWI. Loosely based on the 1932 Ernst Lubitsch film Broken Lullaby, this dynamic film follows Anna (Paula Beer), who begins a quasi-relationship with a mysterious man she finds at the grave of her late husband who died in the war. Full of twists and turns, this narrative is difficult to fully describe without spoiling anything!

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it was chosen to compete for the highest prize, The Golden Lion, and also won the Marcello Mastroianni award for the performance by Paula Beer. It was also nominated for a staggering eleven awards at the Césars, France’s Academy Awards®.
