Inspired partially by a satirical cartoon created by David Low, this entertaining and nostalgic film chronicles 40 years in the life of a congenial British army officer, played by Roger Livesey. The story begins in 1902 when Clive Wynne-Candy returns from service in the Boer War in South Africa. He’s called to Berlin by a family friend and finds himself in a duel with a dashing German officer, Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff. As they recuperate from their wounds in the hospital, the two adversaries become best friends. Despite the hardships of World War I and II, the two officers maintain a close friendship, reconnecting at pivotal times during the wars.
