The Love Bug follows the adventures of a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie, who seems to have a mind of his own! Among his human costars are Jim Douglas (Dean Jones), a down-on-his-luck race car driver who’s now entering demolition derbies instead of speed races, Tennessee Steinmetz (Buddy Hackett), Jim’s friend who creates art from used car parts, and Carole Bennett (Michele Lee), an auto sales associate and mechanic who is responsible for getting Herbie and Jim together in the first place and becomes the object of Jim’s romantic interests. Others in the cast include David Tomlinson, who had been in Disney’s Mary Poppins and would go on to appear in the studio’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and Joe Flynn, who would become a Disney stalwart in such films as The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, The Million Dollar Duck, The Barefoot Executive, and others. Although The New York Times called the film “a long, sentimental Volkswagen commercial,” other reviews praised its charm and audiences loved it, making it the second highest grossing film of 1969. It is based on Gordon Buford’s book, Car, Boy, Girl and the type of car is not specified. The Beetle won out in a car casting call featuring all sorts of entries!
