Young nobleman Orlando—played by Oscar winner Tilda Swinton in one of her breakout roles—is commanded by Queen Elizabeth I to stay forever young. Miraculously, he does just that. The film follows him as he moves through several centuries of British history, experiencing a variety of lives and relationships along the way, and even changing sex. Based on the classic novel by Virginia Woolf, Sally Potter’s visually sumptuous film (its outlandish, exquisite costumes were nominated for an Oscar) is a queer landmark. 35mm print courtesy of UNCSA Moving Image Archives
