Released in 1978, this seminal Mexican film deals with many controversial topics, (especially at the time it was released) such as greed, prostitution and homophobia. Based on the novel “El Lugar Sin Limites” by Chilean writer José Donoso, the film tells the story of Manuela, a transvestite who owns the local bordello. This award-winning film was quite ahead of its time in its depiction of gay men, prostitutes and the violent undercurrent of Mexican society.
