Like Patterns before it, this film began as a teleplay. The original production aired on Playhouse 90 and earned a Peabody Award for Rod Serling, the first given to an individual script. Serling also received an Emmy Award for the work and adapted it as a motion picture six years later. The story centers on Louis “Mountain” Rivera, a has-been boxer suffering from punch-drunk syndrome, a form of brain damage caused by his career. He is managed by the unprincipled Maish, who wants to further exploit Rivera despite attempts from Rivera’s cut man and a sympathetic social worker to help him find a life outside the ring. The cast includes Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney, and Julie Harris, and several actual fighters appear as themselves including Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), Jack Dempsey, and Haystack Calhoun. 35mm archival print courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Special Guest: Anne Serling, daughter of Rod Serling.
