A bookseller and aspiring writer is shaken by the appearance and disappearance of his newfound muse, an enigmatic beauty who steals books from his bookstore. Soon he discovers that she victimizes other bookstores as well, and consumed with jealousy he sets about to unravel the mystery of his obsession. He starts to live in a kind of dog-eared delirium, on the border between fiction and reality, but the closer he gets to her, the more indescribable she becomes. Why does she steal and what are her values? Who is the older man she lives with? What is true or apocryphal in this story? And, in this elegant mystery heavily influenced by the writings of Borges, will he conquer a place in her life as he moves away from his own?
