When the youngest sibling unexpectedly “gets real” about her transgender identity, an uneasy journey of transformation ensues for a Southern family. Each family member grapples with both the news itself and how their aging mother might respond to it. Filmed over the course of twelve years, The Ties That Bind tells Christine’s story of realizing her true identity within the context of what her family did or didn’t know prior to her coming out.
Reflecting today’s culture wars, diverse, longstanding beliefs and generational differences surface among the Newtons as they seek a new normal. The Ties That Bind is a deeply personal and courageous study of the fragility and fortitude of family ties.
