FILMS WITH CLASS: Bringing Independent Cinema to All Students

Films With Class is a K-12 education program serving schools across the Triad with groundbreaking, thought-provoking films that aim to support and reinforce curriculum and expand the possibilities for meaningful dialogue with young people across our community.

To date, Films With Class has reached 39,000 K-12 in 47 area schools. The program does this by presenting free screenings of carefully selected films in classrooms year-round and at our annual festival each spring. Films With Class programming helps students understand the diversity of the human experience and become better global citizens.

From the classroom to the festival

There are two ways schools can take advantage of our free Films With Class program:

  • In-School Screenings: Throughout the school year, RiverRun identifies appropriate feature-length and short films to bring into K-12 classrooms throughout WSFCS and area colleges – creating customized lesson plans that enhance established curriculum goals. Currently, the program includes the option for large, all-school screenings and individual classroom visits. A RiverRun staff member accompanies the screenings to deliver curriculum tools and help frame the post-film discussion. When available, filmmakers also participate in the screenings. We also offer a virtual option, easing up already busy schedules and letting educators fit the programming into what works best for their students.
  • Festival Screenings: During the annual film festival each spring, Films With Class presents three to four days of free screenings of feature-length or short films for K-12 students, hosted at RiverRun venues in Winston-Salem. Same as the classroom screenings, these films are curated to enhance established curriculum goals and include discussions with the filmmakers.
